General rules

Help us protect this quiet oasis of nature.


  • No smoking
  • No alcoholic beverages
  • No loud or boisterous conduct
  • No visiting after dark
  • No littering or dumping
  • No bicycles or motorized vehicles on trails

Keep pets on leash

Dogs love Big Trees! Note the following before you bring Rover along.


  • Dogs must remain on leash at all times
  • Clean up after your pets using the provided waste bags and bins
  • Keep dogs from digging on or off trails

Stay on trail

Forests are delicate ecosystems with life at every layer. Good hiker etiquette is important to ensure the health of this environment.


  • Stay on trails at all times
  • Do not shortcut trails
  • Use only main entrances


Protect plant life

Big Trees is home to a vast array of native plant life. Observe their beauty without disturbing them.


  • Do not dig, remove, or otherwise modify any plants
  • Do not plant new plants of any kind
  • No carving on tree trunks
  • No climbing on trees

Protect yourself

Take precautions to ensure you and your family avoid any common forest hazards while visiting.


  • Be aware of bugs and mosquitoes during warm months and wear bug spray as needed
  • Avoid contact with harmful plants such as poison ivy
  • Walk carefully and avoid tripping on tree roots
  • Do not visit during thunderstorms or dangerous weather

Forest Conservation

All work crews (e.g. surveyors, contractors, utilities) must contact the Big Trees Forest office before entry. It is a criminal offense to destroy, alter, vandalize or remove anything from this forest. It is unlawful to use this Forest in any way other than for which it is intended (Code 1965, Section 71-301 (d)). Violators can be prosecuted.
